Starting up your own retail store

It is a large task to set up your own retail store, but for many store owners it brings a sense of pride that they own a little store in town.

When you are setting up a retail store, there are a few topics that you need to think about.

Risk

All stores have risk, but some have more risk than others. The risk might be something obvious like lack of sales or it could be something less obvious like the depreciation of your stock. Computer stores need to have a higher turn over than most stores as their stock is out of date in less than a year.

Location

There is quite a balance between the location of your retail store and the amount you pay to rent or buy the building space. Although you might be able to get a better location that would result in more sales, you need to make sure that you can cover the cost of the building space.

Experience

Running a retail store can take a lot of experience, but that does not mean than you need to pay people to help you. If you have no experiences with retail stores, go into a store like a second hand book store and ask them about their experiences.

Marketing

It is said that with good marketing, even a bad product can sell well. To succeed, you need to get your name out there. People need to know it and it needs to be a common name.

The best form of marketing you can get is work of mouth. Try offering a discount on return visits or if they refer someone else.
